Seven

I was tagged to provide a meme from the very wonderful Dr. Toub. A meme is a concept, usually involving a list of personal revelations, that passes from one person to another via a social network. The rules of this particular meme are as follows:

  1. Link to your tagger and list these rules on your blog
  2. Share 7 facts about yourself on your blog – some random, some weird
  3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blog (or twitter page)
  4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog. (or twitter account)
  5. If you don’t have 7 blog friends, or if someone else already took dibs, then tag some unsuspecting strangers

So there you go. You want to know seven weird random things about me? Look no further than the next paragraph:

1) I used to live in Italy, just outside of Florence. While I was there I killed a mole with a potato. Long story. The next day I met the artist Jeff Koons and called him a wanker to his face. I have also met David Byrne, but I was much nicer to him.

2) After a grisly night of projectile vomiting when I was six years old, to this day you will never see me eat a raspberry. I can’t stand any sort of casserole, and I’m not a big chocolate lover. I’ve been a vegetarian, on and off (currently on), since about 1988. I think lobster is overrated and maybe even a little gross.

3) I’m one of those baseball fans who loves getting there two hours early to watch batting and fielding practice. I’m not one of those baseball fans who always relies on stats — I tend to go by gut instinct on the quality of players and teams. I’m a rabid Phillies fan and can now cross off “see Phils win another World Series” from my list of Things That Must Happen Before I Die.

4) In 2000 I co-founded one of the first online radio stations. We had listeners from as far away as Australia and Japan, and for some reason our listener base was especially strong in Finland. When the laws governing ASCAP and BMI licensing were changed, the model we had created was no longer financially viable and we packed it in. I still have the emails a number of celebrity musicians sent us.

5) When I was in art school, I was so poor and fashionally inept that I used to staple the holes in my pants together. The staples would come out during class and make my knees bleed. I also used to wash my socks in the bathtub, because I couldn’t afford to go to the laundromat. This worked reasonably well, actually, except one time I didn’t rinse them enough. That night I walked home in the rain, and when my shoes got wet I left sudsy footprints for many blocks behind me. One of my best friends was there and still teases me about it.

6) My wife and I got married in Greece (she’s from there) and currently live in a house that’s 100 years old. Old houses are complicated: love the history and solid construction, hate the non-standard fixtures and lack of insulation. We’ve overhauled the plumbing, electric, heating and roofing systems, and the fire department has been here three times for gas leaks.

7) Many people would be surprised by the degree to which I am authentically concerned about their happiness and well-being.

So there you go. I’m tagging Diana, Lis, Harry, Mike, Molly, Dave and Koreen.
