Clapping Music

Steve ReichHappy 70th birthday yesterday to Steve Reich, one of the most important composers of my lifetime and a profound creative influence on all my various disciplines. Dr. Toub writes a nice little appreciation here. I still listen to Different Trains maybe once a week and it always slays me. Music for 18 Musicians is the perfect late night working music and influenced no shortage of idiomatic music genres. Glasses raised, etc.

    Kel, you might also want to check out:

    * Drumming (his seminal work—I heard it live in Easton in the early 90’s_
    * Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ
    * Octet
    * Four Organs (I love it, but admittedly, it’s an acquired taste)
    * Variations (You Are)

    Thanks David, I’m familiar with most of those. Haven’t heard Octet.

    » Triple Quartet/Music for Large Ensemble = great

    » Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards = one of my favorites

    » Drumming = I like the So Percussion performance

    » You Are (Variations) = good return to form

    » The Four Sections = another personal favorite

    » Tehillim = appreciate the concept, for whatever reason not a top favorite of mine

    » Phase Patterns/Pendulum Music/Four Organs = interesting though not among his best IMO

    Thanks for checking in.
